Just a short walk from the Sumida Hokusai Museum in Tokyo's historic Ryogoku neighborhood, MERIKOTI is a small shop dedicated to a very special Japanese tradition: nuno-zōri – handwoven fabric sandals.
Our original brand, MERI, reimagines this time-honored footwear for modern life. Every pair of MERI zōri is completely handmade, beginning with the creation of the textile cords used to weave the soles. These cords are crafted in-house, then meticulously braided by skilled artisans.
Each pair is completed with soft and comfortable straps known as a hanao, giving it the classic shape of traditional Japanese sandals. From start to finish, a single pair takes over three hours to make.

This Year’s New Collection: Inspired by Hokusai
Our 2025 collection pays tribute to Katsushika Hokusai, the iconic ukiyo-e artist born here in Sumida. Featuring wave-inspired patterns and bold colors, these zōri capture the spirit of "The Great Wave off Kanagawa" and other beloved Hokusai works.
