How to Care for Your MERI

How to Care for Your MERI

MERI can be washed when it becomes dirty.
Here, we will explain how to wash it.

This pair has been worn for about two years and has been washed regularly. On the top side, you can see oil stains from the feet and indentations formed by the body’s weight.

On the underside, it looks as if you’ve been cleaning the floor with it—completely covered in dirt.

First, check the underside of your MERI and remove any dust, debris, hair, or lint with Scotch tape or something similar. Be sure to carefully clean out the small particles caught in the weave as well.
If the stains are heavy, we recommend soaking it overnight in warm water with neutral detergent dissolved in it.

MERI can be washed in a washing machine. If your machine has a gentle course such as “Hand Wash Mode” or “Delicate Mode,” please select that setting.

It is fine to place them in a laundry net, but for best results, fold the straps (hanao) inward, overlap them, turn the soles facing outward, tie them with string, and then put them into the net. This way, dirt will come off more easily.

Because each MERI is tightly handwoven by artisans, it takes time to dry. Please be patient and dry them thoroughly. If not dried completely, they may develop odors.

Here is a pair that has been washed, dried, and had its straps adjusted. The fluffiness has returned, and the comfort has been restored.
When you feel they are 'getting dirty' or 'becoming a bit stiff,' we highly recommend giving them a wash.
