The Beauty of Five-Toe Socks and Tabi Socks: Freedom for Your Feet
Socks with separated toes.
Five-toe socks and tabi socks.
Don't you think they're kind of cool?
Most socks hide the natural shape of our toes, wrapping them together inside a single piece of fabric.
But five-toe socks and tabi socks are different.
The shape of your toes becomes part of the design itself.
And we find something uniquely beautiful about that.
Not Just for Ninjas

Outside Japan, tabi socks are sometimes called "ninja socks."
Their distinctive split-toe shape may remind people of the traditional footwear worn by Japanese ninjas.
But there's more to this design than its unusual appearance.
It's about giving your toes room to move.
Feeling the ground beneath your feet. Being more aware of how your toes move and how your feet make contact with the floor.
We spend so much of our lives with our toes enclosed inside shoes and socks. What if we gave them a little more freedom?
We believe that being aware of our toes and how we use them is an important part of enjoying natural movement.
Of course, simply wearing split-toe socks doesn't automatically improve foot strength or function.
But once you experience the feeling of having more freedom around your toes, it can be difficult to go back.
It All Started with MERI

We make MERI, a traditional Japanese zori-inspired indoor slipper.
With its distinctive thong-style straps, MERI allows your toes to move freely and feels wonderful against bare feet.
But we wanted people to enjoy wearing MERI in winter, too.
That's why we began making tabi socks and five-toe socks more than 10 years ago.
Back then, split-toe socks weren't really considered fashionable.
They were often associated with older generations or people particularly interested in foot health.
Some people even said they would feel embarrassed taking off their shoes and revealing five-toe socks underneath.
But we always wondered:
Why couldn't something with such an interesting shape become part of everyday fashion?
More Than 10 Years of Designing Split-Toe Socks

We began creating socks that we genuinely wanted to wear with our everyday clothes.
Patterns inspired by Scandinavian textiles.
Designs based on traditional Japanese motifs.
Animals, flowers, botanical illustrations, and playful combinations of colors.
Over the years, we experimented with countless patterns, carefully considering how they would look with ordinary outfits.
We wanted to create socks that wouldn't feel out of place with modern fashion.
Socks you wouldn't feel embarrassed to reveal when taking off your shoes.
In fact, socks you might actually want people to notice.
More than a decade later, we've created an incredible variety of designs.
And Then, We Discovered the Beauty of Simplicity
After years of exploring colors and patterns, we've found ourselves increasingly drawn to something much simpler.
Solid-colored socks.
Cotton, wool, and even Japanese washi paper yarn.
Simple materials, comfortable textures, and no decorative patterns.
And something interesting happened when we removed the patterns.
We began to notice the shape of the feet themselves.
The gentle lines of the toes.
The way the toes connect to the top of the foot.
With tabi socks, the distinctive curve created by separating the big toe from the other four.
With five-toe socks, the delicate silhouette of each individual toe.
Without patterns or decoration, these shapes become even more beautiful.
Just look at this silhouette.

We often admire the beauty of human hands.
The length of the fingers, their movement, the subtle lines of the bones.
But don't you think feet can be beautiful, too?
Perhaps we simply don't notice them because they're usually hidden inside shoes.
Feet have their own shapes, lines, and expressions.
And we think those shapes deserve to be seen.
Let Your Feet Become Part of Your Style

Five-toe socks and tabi socks aren't just for wearing with MERI.
Of course, they work beautifully with our Japanese zori slippers.
But there's so much more you can do with them.
Try pairing them with traditional Japanese zori or setta sandals, or with modern split-toe footwear such as the Nike Air Rift and Maison Margiela's iconic Tabi shoes.
The Nike Air Rift, with its distinctive split-toe design, is a particularly great match for tabi socks. Together, they create a unique silhouette that feels both sporty and stylish.
Simple, solid-colored tabi socks can complement casual outfits as well as more sophisticated, fashion-forward styles.
There's no reason to hide the fact that your toes are separated.
Why not make that distinctive shape part of your look?
The silhouette of your feet can become a design feature in its own right.
A Little More Freedom for Your Feet

We originally started making five-toe socks and tabi socks because we wanted people to enjoy MERI throughout the colder months.
But after more than 10 years of creating them, our appreciation for these socks has grown into something much bigger.
The freedom to move your toes.
The pleasure of natural, comfortable materials.
And the beauty of the human foot itself.
Socks don't have to be something that simply covers your feet.
They can also be a way to celebrate their natural shape.
Instead of hiding your toes, let them become part of your style.
Give your feet a little more freedom.
We hope you'll enjoy discovering our TUTUMU five-toe socks and tabi socks, whether you wear them with MERI or with your favorite shoes.
