When many international visitors hear the name Ryogoku, the first thing that comes to mind is probably sumo.
And of course, Ryogoku is famous as the heart of Japan's sumo culture.
But those of us who live and work here know that there is so much more to discover.
Ryogoku is a neighborhood where you can experience Japanese food, history, art, traditional culture, and craftsmanship—all within walking distance.
That's why we're especially delighted to see MERI included in the MICHELIN Guide's introduction to our neighborhood.
Discover Japanese Craftsmanship at MERI
At MERI, we create handmade Japanese zori slippers using our original knitted yarn.
Each pair is carefully made by skilled artisans, combining the traditional form of Japanese footwear with materials and techniques suited to modern life.
At our shop in Ryogoku, you can see and try on MERI, along with our tabi socks, five-toe socks, embroidered button hook accessories, and other textile products.
You can also join our Japanese zori-making workshop and make your own pair.
Choose your favorite colors, learn how the zori are made, and experience Japanese craftsmanship with your own hands.
For visitors from overseas, we hope it's not simply a place to shop, but a place to discover a small part of Japanese culture and the craftsmanship that continues in Tokyo today.
Enjoy Ryogoku Through Food
One of the wonderful things about exploring Ryogoku is the food.
The area has many restaurants where you can experience Japanese culinary culture, from traditional dishes to restaurants recognized by the MICHELIN Guide.
Among them is Edosoba Hosokawa, a well-known soba restaurant in Ryogoku.
Soba has deep roots in the food culture of Edo—the old name for Tokyo—making it a particularly fitting dish to enjoy while exploring this historic neighborhood.
Food, craftsmanship, art, and history may seem like very different things, but in Ryogoku they are all connected by the culture that has developed here over generations.
Ryogoku Is More Than Sumo
Of course, no visit to Ryogoku would be complete without experiencing its sumo culture.
But we recommend giving yourself enough time to explore beyond the famous sights.
Walk through the neighborhood and you'll discover museums, gardens, historic places, local restaurants, cafés, traditional sweets, and small shops.
You may find traces of Edo history just around the corner from contemporary Tokyo life.
This mixture is one of the things we love most about Ryogoku.
It's not a neighborhood where you need to rush from one attraction to another.
Take your time.
Stop for soba.
Visit a museum.
Walk through a garden.
